KATACARA, Jakarta, – Pengelolaan sampah di Indonesia masih menjadi persoalan pelik yang sulit dituntaskan. Data dari Kementerian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan (KLHK) menyebutkan bahwa total produksi sampah nasional pada 2020 mencapai 67,8 juta ton. Sekitar 185 juta ton sampah dihasilkan setiap harinya. Artinya, dari total 270 juta penduduk Indonesia, masing-masing individu menghasilkan 0,68 kilogram sampah per hari.

Selain memicu bencana alam dan berimplikasi pada kesehatan, sampah yang tidak dikelola dengan baik juga berpotensi mencemari lingkungan dan menimbulkan kerugian ekonomi. Sampah laut di Indonesia misalnya, menyumbang kerugian yang cukup besar. Bank Dunia dalam laporan bertajuk Oceans for Prosperity Reforms for a Blue Economy in Indonesia, mengungkapkan kerugian Indonesia akibat sampah laut mencapai 450 juta USD, atau 6,5 triliun rupiah setiap tahunnya.

Kecintaannya pada lingkungan dan keinginan yang kuat untuk membawa Indonesia terbebas dari permasalahan sampah, membuat Nur Efti Martarina, alumni Program Studi Teknik Lingkungan Universitas Pertamina, memilih untuk mencuri ilmu pengelolaan sampah dari Eropa. Rina berkesempatan melanjutkan pendidikan ke University of Debrecen, Hungaria, di bidang teknik lingkungan.

“Tak hanya membudayakan eco friendly lifestyle atau menggalakan inovasi, permasalahan sampah juga harus diselesaikan melalui penegakan hukum dan sanksi, serta edukasi kepada masyarakat. Saya ingin mencuri ilmu ini untuk diterapkan di Indonesia. Terutama menanamkan budaya cinta lingkungan sejak dini”, ungkap Rina dalam wawancara daring, Senin (12/7).

University of Debrecen bukanlah universitas kaleng-kaleng. Pada tahun 2021, ia berada di peringkat 521 QS World University Ranking. Di website populer Studyportals, University of Debrecen mendapatkan ratings 4,1 dan berbagai ulasan positif. Kesempatan berkuliah ke Eropa diraih Rina melalui program Beasiswa Stipendium Hungaricum. Program beasiswa Pemerintah Hungaria ini memberikan pembebasan biaya kuliah, asuransi kesehatan, hingga uang saku. Diakui Rina, ia memilih University of Debrecen karena jurusan yang ia ambil di kampus ini memiliki kekhususan dalam bidang pengelolaan sampah.

“Berkat Mata Kuliah Pengelolaan Sampah yang saya dapatkan di program studi Teknik Lingkungan Universitas Pertamina, saya jadi memiliki ketertarikan pada isu ini. Selain itu, saya juga sempat terlibat dalam beberapa proyek penelitian dan pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang fokus pada pengelolaan limbah dan sampah. Salah satunya adalah penelitian kolaborasi dengan Toyohashi University of Technology Jepang terkait estimasi sampah plastik yang bermuara di lautan Indonesia,” tutur Rina.

Selain Rina, dua alumni program studi Teknik Lingkungan Universitas Pertamina lain, juga telah berhasil meraih cita-cita berkarir di mancanegara. Pavita Khansa, misalnya, diterima bekerja di Daiki Axis Co., Ltd, Matsuyama, Jepang. Daiki adalah perusahaan yang bergerak di bidang water environment. Alumni lain, yakni Kevin Foggy, mendapatkan beasiswa melanjutkan studi magister di Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taiwan.

Ketertarikan para alumni terhadap alam, tumbuhan dan hewan serta bagaimana hubungan seluruh entitas tersebut dengan lingkungan, membawa mereka menjadi pembelajar sepanjang hayat (longlife learner). Ketiga alumni berharap, pengalaman yang akan mereka dapatkan di luar negeri nantinya, akan membantu mereka untuk menuntaskan permasalahan lingkungan di Indonesia.
