KATACARA, JAKARTA, – Dalam peringatan hari sungai 27 Juli lalu, Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) mencatat setidaknya 46 persen sungai di Indonesia berada dalam kondisi tercemar berat. Di Jakarta sendiri, National Geographic (Maret, 2020) mencatat bahwa dari 57 persen sampah yang ada, 8,2 persennya merupakan limbah tekstil. Selain mengancam biota yang hidup di sepanjang aliran sungai, limbah yang mencemari sungai juga berbahaya bagi kesehatan. Mulai dari penyakit kulit, hingga potensi penyakit kanker, jika air yang tercemar dikonsumsi.

Melihat pencemaran limbah tekstil itu, tim peneliti dari Universitas Pertamina terdorong untuk mencari inovasi mengatasinya. Tim peneliti diketuai oleh Nona Merry Merpati Mitan dan beranggotakan dosen serta mahasiswa dari Prodi Kimia, Teknik Kimia, Teknik Lingkungan dan Teknik Mesin. Tim ini mengembangkan purwarupa pengolah limbah tekstil khususnya yang digunakan dalam industri batik skala rumah tangga. Pada tahun 2019, tim peneliti berkesempatan mengunjungi kawasan industri batik skala rumah tangga di Kota Tasikmalaya. Pada kesempatan itu, tim berkesempatan mewawancarai beberapa pengrajin batik. Mereka mengatakan adanya kebutuhan akan pengolah limbah cair batik agar tetap dapat menjaga kualitas air di perairan. Atas dasar itulah, dikembangkan purwarupa pengolah limbah cair batik.

Pengolah limbah cair batik yang digagas Merry dan tim, mengguunakan teknik penyerapan dan koagulasi. Pengolah limbah ini merupakan teknologi tepat guna yang mudah digunakan oleh masyarakat pengrajin batik. Penggunaan pengolah limbah ini dapat menurunkan kadar kekeruhan air limbah. Para pelaku industri batik kecil-menengah, lanjut Merry, umumnya menggunakan pewarna sintetik yang mudah diperoleh. Namun, zat pewarna jenis ini seringkali menghasilkan limbah yang berpotensi mencemari lingkungan. “Sementara, alat pengolah limbah yang tersedia di pasaran harganya sangat mahal. Kami berharap, kedepannya inovasi ini akan terus dikembangkan dan diproduksi untuk dapat membantu para pelaku industri batik kecil-menengah,” pungkas Merry.

Dalam pembuatan purwarupa, Merry dan tim turut serta melibatkan mahasiswa. Salah satu diantaranya adala Desi Fitriana, salah satu mahasiswa dari Prodi Kimia, mengungkapkan kebanggaannya tergabung dalam tim. “Melalui kegiatan ini, kami dapat secara langsung mempraktikan pembelajaran yang kami dapatkan di kelas dan praktikum yang rutin kami lakukan di laboratorium. Selain meningkatkan pemahaman, kami juga jadi lebih siap untuk terjun ke industri setelah lulus nanti,” ujar Desi.

Edukasi terkait bahaya limbah cair batik bagi lingkungan dan kesehatan, lanjut Merry, juga harus terus dilakukan kepada para pengrajin batik. Dengan demikian, kesadaran para pelaku industri dan pengrajin akan mulai terbangun. Upaya edukasi kepada masyarakat, dilakukan Merry dan tim melalui kerja sama dengan Pemerintah Kota Tasikmalaya. Merry dan tim berharap, perlahan upaya ini dapat membantu mengurangi pencemaran sungai di Indonesia.
